Primero Café
About This Spot
Stepping into Primero Café feels like slipping into a cherished neighborhood nook where mornings gently unfold at their own rhythm. Nestled in the heart of Gijón’s Centro district, this intimate space hums quietly with the early buzz of locals and visitors who cherish not only their coffee but the familiar nods and smiles exchanged across its small tables. The cozy atmosphere invites you to pause, whether you're settling in for a thoughtful breakfast or simply savoring a moment between the city's unfolding rhythms.
The pace at Primero is comforting—unrushed yet attentive—with a warmth that comes from a team who clearly know their regulars and take pride in crafting each cup just so. Arriving just before the rush eases into midday, you might find the rich aroma of freshly brewed cold brew and the enticing hint of something sweet baking nearby drawing you into a conversation or a quiet moment of reflection.
Here, breakfast and coffee are paired with thoughtful touches that feel like local secrets. Imagine a perfectly balanced coffee tonic or a creamy cappuccino subtly lifted by a dash of hazelnut or orange—each sip a small invitation to linger. Meanwhile, the kitchen offers familiar regional comforts that go beyond simple sustenance: a delicate spin on the classic Spanish tortilla, or a carefully toasted slice of jamón that pairs effortlessly with your café con leche.
Primero Café’s charm lies not only in the food and drink but in the sense of connection it fosters. In a space where queues are a quiet testament to its popularity, patrons find a shared love for the local flavors woven seamlessly with a welcoming spirit. It’s a place where mornings feel grounded and genuine—where the small details, from the carefully brewed espresso to the gentle service, combine to craft an experience that feels both intimate and alive with the pulse of the city.

We’re from Sydney, Australia and have just spent a whole month in wonderful Gijon! Every morning (except Sundays) we were at Primera just before 9am to make sure we got a seat. Primera’s coffee and their Spanish version of avocado toast was exceptional as was Jairo and his teams service. We looked forward to seeing them every morning!! When Primera was closed on Sundays we tried a few other specialty coffee cafes, but can tell you Primera’s coffee, service and the cafe vibe was the best by far. Thanks to Jairo and his gorgeous girls for making our mornings so special - We miss you already !

This is a very nice place to have coffee, breakfast and/or brunch. It is a very small place and always busy. Expect to que if you go before 11AM. The food is very nice and the staff are very friendly. They have typical food here. I would recommend a visit here to have breakfast and coffee.

The flat white with oat milk here was excellent and very well priced, can highly recommend it.

Highly recommended! The 2nd time I wanted to go but the line was too long. But still it’s my favorite cafeteria in Gijón.

Delicious food, local feel, EXCELLENT coffee. We were so impressed with this place that we came back the next day. Great vegetarian options too!

Great if you like small “hipster” “barista style” cafés. The staff was working like bees and made delicious coffee. We enjoyed the Spanish potato egg pancake and enjoyed the buzz of this place

Very popular for a reason… the coffee is amazing and the tortilla is the best in the city. Friendly service too.

We are travellers from Austria and Belarus. After waking up in our camping car we were craving some asturian breakfast. And we found a GEM. We have travelled around all of Spain - look no further - the best Tortilla & Pantumaca we ever had. The coffee was amazing as well. The Delicious & great prices! We paid 10€ for a breakfast for 2.
